Eye care for keratoconus

If you have keratoconus, you will need two health care providers:

1. The ophthalmologist
The ophthalmologist checks the keratoconus for progression. Corneal Crosslinking (CXL) may be advised with progression. This procedure stabilizes the progression of keratoconus. Keratoconus is not cured or corrected with it.

With keratoconus you have a higher risk of complications when wearing contact lenses due to an increased sensitivity of the eyes with keratoconus. The ophthalmologist can intervene with medication for this.

About 20% of keratoconus patients develop a very severe form. They may be candidates for a cornea transplant.

2. The optometrist/contact lens specialist
The optometrist/contact lens specialist corrects the eye defect of keratoconus. The optometrists of the Keratoconus Center in the Netherlands are well aware of the risks of progression of keratoconus. They can also quickly recognize complications, so that an ophthalmologist can be called in effectively.

You understand that it is very important that the ophthalmologist and the optometrist/contact lens specialist can work together and communicate very well.

The Keratoconus Center in the Netherlands has not established itself in a hospital, but it does have very good contacts with ophthalmologists. Only after your personal permission will your data be exchanged with your treating ophthalmologist.
